A 15 year study looking at injuries to professional and amateur kickboxing contestants
The data consisted of 481 fighters (Male: 406, Female: 75; Professionals: 435, amateurs: 59) competing in 487 contests. The mean age of the fighters was 29 years.
380 injuries occurred from 974 athlete exposures (AE), 9562 minutes of exposure time. Making the injury incidence 390.10 per 1000 AE
Note: A significant amount of injuries did not report the type or injury (64.2%) or anatomical region (47.6%)
Of those that did report:
Most common site:
- Head 57.8%
- Lower limb 26.1%
Most common injury
- Lacerations 70.6%
- Fractures 20.6%
Professionals were 2.5x more likely to be injured than amateurs
